Shopbop Co-founder Martha Michelson (center, top) models a pair of Elizabeth and James soft pants.
The fashion editorials of O, the Oprah Magazine, spotlight stylish pieces that are real women-wearable, have the ability to transform your (out)look, and possess our favorite adjective, timelessness. Among Oprah’s top picks this spring? The utility jacket, the sequined tank, the print jersey dress, and she turned to Shopbop for the season’s hottest bottoms: the soft pant. Shopbop Co-Founder and Creative Director Martha Michelson modeled Elizabeth and James’s version of slouchy-chic for the feature “Spring’s Best, Most Wearable Trends,” and I caught up with her for a few more details.
Suzanne: How did the Oprah article come about?
Martha: Originally, the March Issue of O was to focus on successful women, and Alle (our PR representative) and O’s fashion editor developed the idea of featuring Shopbop (fashion) and me (a successful woman). The subject of the story evolved to be more about spring trends, with a focus on future classics: those key on-trend items you can buy now that will transcend seasons. Fashion Director Kate Ciepluch collaborated with Oprah’s editorial team to decide what pieces to pull from our spring collections for the story.
S: What different soft pant styles will we be seeing at Shopbop, and which brands do the look especially well?
M: Everything from harem sweatpants to military-inspired cargo pants to silk dress pants. Styles range from edgy Alexander Wang to fashion-forward Elizabeth and James to the casual-chic spin of Splendid and James Perse. Vince and ADAM offer some great styles that have a tailored and sophisticated look.
S: Oprah calls this one of spring’s “most wearable” trends, but pulling it off requires proper styling. What would you wear it with to balance its proportions?
