Thoroughly Mod Milly

Milly designer Michelle Smith cited the films of Jean-Luc Godard (godfather of the French New Wave), as inspiration for her fall 2010 collection, and with all the pop-art print dresses, cute pea coats, colorblock, checks, and berets she sent down the runway, the connection wasn’t hard to make. Mod is notoriously tricky to pull off without looking like you’re trying to make your Twiggy Halloween costume go double-duty as daywear, but Smith showed how to mix swinging ’60s themes with of-the-moment silhouettes and styling, keeping things in the now. Take your cues from the Milly runway and try an A-line miniskirt with sleek flats and a slim-fitting cardigan with gold trim. It’s a thoroughly modern approach to mod that retains the playful part without veering into mere silliness.
