Underthings as Outerwear

The lines between under- and outerwear haven’t been this hazy since the ’80s, but don’t rush to get out your Aqua Net and jelly bracelets. Today’s lingerie-inspired styles have more in common with a film noir starlet than with Madonna.

Only Hearts and VPL bras and bandeaus are pretty peeking out of a tank, V-neck sweater, or sheer tee. For a more office-going look, try layering a ladylike chiffon or lace tank from Beyond Vintage or Club Monaco under a blazer or cardigan, and when nighttime falls, a sleepwear-inspired slip dress from Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent will strike just the right balance of alluring and refined.

For the brave, anything goes—from shapewear skirts (we love Thatcher by Alisse Thatcher’s version) to leather bustiers. So slip into La Fee Verte’s stay-ups, cinch your waist with Alexander Wang’s corset vest, and go out there and seize the night.
